A laneway is essentially a link from one place to another, a shortcut or means of travelling around the congestion of mainstream traffic. These networks of concrete are frequented during daylight hours by children calling home for lunch, old age pensioners on the way to the post office, mothers taking babies for a quiet stroll. By night however this heterotopic space takes on a more deviant role. I wanted to create a porthole, a juxtaposition of time in space, bringing as aspect of one world into another. I wanted to bring to the audience in broad daylight a symbol of their night time activities.
