space

Here I acted as curator for a show, taking art out of the confines of a sterile gallery space and into the realm of the real. The removal of an object from its familiar context and the positioning of it in an unfamiliar state brings its recognized meaning into question. I took the plinth, an object once associated with high art or monumentality, and shrunk it to remove its intimidating status. Then I placed it on the 'common' ground of the street corner. This placement of the art object below the average person allows the audience to look down on something which would typically look down on them. A role reversal and exchange of power where art can be viewed without awe or apprehension, kicked over, knocked and destroyed. This allowed the audience to experience art in their own time and without the trappings of venturing to a gallery or having to put on airs.

Thanks to all the 2nd year (06/07) students of Wexford Campus School of Art and Design (Gorey) for both artworks and installation.
